Sir William Jones.

(28 September 1746 – 27 April 1794)

English-Welsh Philologist, Scholar of Ancient India and co-founder of Asiatic Society of Bengal in Calcutta on  15th January 1784. A linguistic child prodigy,  Jones by the end of his life became a hyperglot knowing 13 languages including Greek, Latin, Persian, Arabic, Hebrew thoroughly and another 28 languages reasonably well. His most important (re)discovery or observation is that Sanskrit bears a close resemblance to Classical Greek and Latin.  Though this observation was credited to him, Gaston-Laurent Coeurdoux, a French Jesuit, who spent all his life in India seems to have demonstrated the existing analogy between Sanskrit, Greek and Latin (and even German and Russian) in a memoir he sent in 1767 to the  French Academy of Sciences.
