అశాంతీ, ఆతురతలతో నిండిన ఈ ఆధునిక ప్రపంచంలో,

నువ్వూ, నేనూ, మనవంతు ఆనందం మనసారా అనుభవించేం;

ఈ నావకెత్తిన తెల్లని తెరచాపలు మూసివేయబడ్డాయి

మనం ఇందులోకెత్తిన సరకంతా ఖర్చుచేసేశాం.

రోదనవల్ల సంతోషం నానుండి నిష్క్రమించింది, 

అందుకు నా చెక్కిళ్ళు ప్రాయములోనే కళతప్పాయి,  

వయసుమీరని నా పెదాల అరుణిమని వేదన హరించింది,

వినాశము నా శయ్యమీద ఆఖరితెరలు దించుతోంది.

కానీ, కిక్కిరిసిన ఈ జీవితం నీకు ఒక వీణ,

ఒక జంత్రం, లేక వయోలాల సమ్మోహనాదంలాగో 

లేదా, ఉదాత్త సాగర సంగీతానికి పేలవమైన అనుకరణ

శంకువులో నిద్రించే ప్రతిధ్వనిలాగో అనిపించవచ్చు.

షేక్స్పియరు తర్వాత అంత ఎక్కువగానూ సాహిత్యంలో ఉటంకించబడే (quoted) వ్యక్తి ఆస్కార్ వైల్డ్ మాత్రమే.

ఈ కవిత నిజానికి Dialogues అన్న పేరుతో రాసిన కవితల్లో రెండవది. మొదటికవితలో ఇద్దరు ప్రేమికులు విడిపోతున్నప్పుడు, స్త్రీ దృక్పధంలో ఆ విడిపోవడానికి కారణాలు చెబితే, దానికి సమాధానంగా చెప్పిన ఈ కవితలో, పురుషుడి దృక్కోణం నుండి సమాధానం ఉంటుంది.  

అనేక కారణాల వల్ల ప్రేమికులు విడిపోవడం చాలా సందర్భాలలో జరుగుతుంది. కానీ అన్నిటిలోనూ ఒకరు వాళ్ల విడిపోవడానికి కారణమైన విషయాన్ని మన్నించగలిగినా/ మరిచిపోవాలని చూసినా, రెండవవారు దాన్ని క్షమించలేరు. అప్పుడుకూడ, కొందరిలో  ఉదాత్తమైన వ్యక్తిత్వం, అవతలి వ్యక్తి పట్ల నిజమైన ప్రేమానురాగాలూ వ్యక్తమవుతూనే ఉంటాయి. ఈ కవిత, బహుశా అతని తొలిప్రేయసి Florence తో విడిపోయిన సందర్భంలో వ్రాసి ఉండవచ్చునని కొందరి ఊహ.

Within this restless, hurried, modern world

We took our hearts’ full pleasure – You and I,

And now the white sails of our ship are furled,

And spent the lading of our argosy.

Wherefore my cheeks before their time are wan,

For very weeping is my gladness fled,
