గుడారాల దీపాలవెలుగులో,
నా చుట్టూ నిశ్శబ్దంగా,
నెమ్మదిగా కొన్ని అందమైన నీడలు తారట్లాడుతున్నాయి…
ముందుగా నేను గమనించింది
దూరాన నిద్రలో నున్న సైనిక పటాలం;
రేఖామాత్రంగా కనిపిస్తున్న పొలాలూ;
చిట్టడవుల చివరలూ; చిమ్మచీకటీ;
ఉండుండి చీకటిని వెలిగిస్తూ
చలిమంటలను ఎగదోసినపుడు
పైకి ఎగసిపడే నిప్పు రవ్వలూ…
నిశ్శబ్దమూ;
అప్పుడప్పుడు దెయ్యాల్లా కదుల్తున్న
ఒకటో అరో మనుషుల జాడలూ;
చెట్లూ చేమలూ
(ఒక్కసారి కళ్ళెత్తిచూసేసరికి
అవి నన్నుదొంగచాటుగా గమనిస్తున్నాయేమోనని అనిపించింది);
గాలికూడా ఆలోచనలతో జతకట్టి ఊరేగుతుంటే…
ఓహ్! ఎంత సున్నితమైన, అద్భుతమైన ఆలోచనలు…
జీవితం గురించీ, మృత్యువుగురించీ,
ఇంట్లోవాళ్లగురించీ, గతమూ, గతించిన ప్రేమలూ,
దూరమైపోయినవాళ్ళూ;
నేనలా నేలమీద కూర్చుని గమనిస్తుంటే,
నా చుట్టూ చప్పుడుచెయ్యకుండా వెళ్తున్న ఊరేగింపులా…
దూరాన్నున్న గుడారాల వెలుగునుండి
ప్రవాహంలా వస్తున్ననీడలు…

By the bivouac’s fitful flame,
A procession winding around me, solemn and sweet and slow;—but first I note,
The tents of the sleeping army, the fields’ and woods’ dim outline,
The darkness, lit by spots of kindled fire—the silence;
Like a phantom far or near an occasional figure moving;
The shrubs and trees, (as I lift my eyes they seem to be stealthily watching me;)
While wind in procession thoughts, O tender and wondrous thoughts,
Of life and death—of home and the past and loved, and of those that are far away;
A solemn and slow procession there as I sit on the ground,
By the bivouac’s fitful flame.
