ఉచితంగా… ఓర్హాన్ వేలీ కణిక్, టర్కీ కవి

(నిరలంకారంగా కనిపిస్తున్న ఈ మాటల వెనక, కవి పేదరికాన్నీ, దుర్భరమైపోయిన జీవితాన్నీ, స్వేఛ్ఛాప్రియత్వాన్నీ, జీవించగల అదృష్టాన్నీ ఎంత గాఢంగా, నిగూఢంగా చెప్పాడో గమనించండి.  “కారు బయట” అన్న మాట, కారులో కూర్చోవాలంటే ఖర్చు అని పరోక్షంగా సూచించడానికీ, దుకాణాల  కిటికీలు విండో షాపింగ్ కీ,  ఇందులో పేర్కొన్న ప్రకృతి ప్రసాదించే వనరులుతప్ప ప్రతీదీ ఖరీదైనదే అని  సూచిస్తూ, వ్యంగ్యంగా చెప్పాడు.)

మనం స్వేఛ్చగా బ్రతికేస్తున్నాం.
గాలి ఉచితం,  మేఘాలు ఉచితం,
ఈ కొండలూ, లోయలూ ఉచితమే.
వర్షం ఉచితం, మట్టి ఉచితం.
కార్ల బయట అంతా ఉచితం,
సినిమా హాళ్ళ బయట జాగా ఉచితం,
దుకాణాల కిటికీలు ఉచితం.
రొట్టే, వెన్నా అలా కాదే.
కాని మళ్ళీ ఉప్పునీరు ఉచితం.
స్వాతంత్ర్యం కావాలంటే
నీ జీవితాన్ని మూల్యంగా చెల్లించాల్సి వస్తుంది
కాని, బానిసత్వం ఉచితం…
ఎక్కడో అక్కడ… కావాలనుకున్నవాడికి
మనం ఖరీదు చెల్లించక్కరలేకుండా బ్రతికేస్తున్నాం,
ఉచితంగా.

For Free

.

We are living for free;
The air’s for free, the clouds are for free,
hills and dales are for free.
Rain and mud are for free.
The outside of cars,
the foyers of movie-houses,
shop-windows are for free.
It’s not the same as bread and cheese –
but salt-water is for free.

Freedom will cost you your life,
but slavery is free – somewhere –
to anyone who wants it.
We are living for free.
For free.

Orhan Veli Kanik

Poet, Short Story Writer, Essayist and Translator
(13 April 1914  –  14 November 1950, )

Founder of Garip Movement in Turkish Literature along with  Okatay Rifat and Melih Cevdet, Orhan Veli Kanik brought the language of the man-in-the street to poetry and by consciously avoiding popular meters, and embellishments like  Simile, Metaphor and Exaggeration, in poetry, he set new trends in Turkish literature very much comparable to the English Romantic Movement of the 18th Century. A unique voice and depth of emotion lie under his seemingly simple verse. He has to his credit about 5 volumes of poetry and a volume of translations. 

Using such simple language as used, please kindly notice how the poet speaks about poverty, the banality of life and about the urge for freedom in spite of such conditions.  Using “the out side of cars” to indicate it costs to get inside; “shop-windows” for window shopping; and mentioning even simple things as bread and butter costly, he drives home everything except the nature’s blessings are costly.  Behind these unassuming words, we get the pulse of his angst and concern for the living.  Don’t we?

    ఆయన నిరాశా నిస్పృహల్లో నలిగిపోయిన పోతున్న కాగితపు పూలని మాలగా చుట్టి సమర్పించాడు.

      శివగారూ,
      కాగితపు పువ్వులా మారిపోయిన జీవితాన్ని, నిర్గంధ కుసుమం అయిపోయిన జీవితాన్ని, దుర్భరమైపోయి ఎవరికీ పట్టని జీవితాన్ని ఎంత ఆర్తిగా చెప్పాడు! ఇప్పుడు మన దేశంలోనూ రాష్ట్రంలోనూ పరిస్థితి అంతకు భిన్నంగా ఉందా? ప్రజల సహనానికీ, అధికారుల అవినీతికీ పరిమితులు కనిపిస్తున్నాయా? కాని కవులూ, కవిత్వమూ మాత్రం తామరాకుమీది నీటిబొట్టులా వీటికి దూరంగా ఉన్నాయి.

      In earlier days, slavery was imposed by the powerful. Now it is volunteered. We are slaves to authority, we are slaves to our recreations, we are slaves to our greed, And it is not surprising after exhausting all avenues of income, governments impose, like water cess, air cess, no matter whether it is clean or polluted, for the amount of oxygen you breathe, Where slavery is volunteered there will be no revolutions. No changes.

    The simple language of this verse has a sharp edge that cannot be missed by anyone…as you have said,,,depth of emotion, angst, concern all are palpable and can slice through the most complacent mind to create an unease.

    Yes, Shernaz.

    The pity is, in life becoming prohibitively costlier, our country is no different now. The difference, however, is we lack a poet like him to awaken the people. And his subtle statement that ‘slavery is free’ for those who want… can’t be lost sight of. There are more volunteers to slavery now…. IAS officers and IPS officers not excepted.
