నీడల్లా కదులుతున్న ‘ఓక్ ‘ చెట్ల మీదనుండి అరుణతార కనిపిస్తున్నట్టు.
సడిచెయ్యని ప్రేతాత్మలా,
మిణుగురుల పచ్చని మిణుకుల్లోంచి
పడవ పెట్టిన పెనుబొబ్బకి
నిశ్శబ్దం బెదిరి పారిపోతున్నట్టు
ఒక హెరాన్ రెక్కలల్లార్చుకుంటూ ఎగిరిపోయింది.

చాలా మంది Pure Poetry అంటే ఏమిటి అని అవహేళనతో కూడిన ప్రశ్న అడగడం చాలా సందర్భాలలో విన్నాను. వాళ్ళ ఉద్దేశ్యంలో Pure Poetry ఉండదని. అంటే, ఒక సిద్ధాంతానికో, ఒక లక్ష్యాన్ని ఉద్దేశించో రాసినదే కవిత్వం తప్ప, ఇతరం కవిత్వం కాదని. నామట్టుకు, ఇలాంటి కవితలు Pure Poetry క్రిందకి వస్తాయి. ఒక సంఘటనని, ఒక అనుభవాన్ని, యధాతథంగా చిత్రిస్తూ, కళ్ళముందు ఒక చిత్రాన్ని కనిపింప జెయ్యడం… కవి తన అనుభూతిని పదాల్లోకి విక్షేపించి, పాఠకుడికి పరావర్తనం చెయ్యగలగడం.
ఇందులో నాకు రెండు అందమైన పదచిత్రాలు కనిపించేయి. మొదటిది “Spotted Rain drops” స్ఫోటకం మచ్చల్లా ఉన్నాయిట ఆ నదిమీద పడుతున్న చినుకులు. ఎంత అందమైన చిత్రణో చూడండి. రెండవది అద్భుతమైన ఊహ. స్టీమరు ఒక పెడబొబ్బ పెట్టగానే, ప్రకృతిలో ఆవహించిన నిశ్శబ్దం పటాపంచలైపోయింది. అది సహజం. దానికి, అతను Like Silence Taking Flight అన్న ఉత్ప్రేక్ష చేశాడు. ఒక రసహృదయం లేనిదే ఇలాంటి చమత్కారాలు చెయ్యడం సాధ్యం కాదు.

Through wild and tangled forests
The broad, unhasting river flows—
Spotted with rain-drops, gray with night;

Well, I often heard asking “what is pure poetry?” with a deriding tone, meaning that there is nothing like pure poetry, and poetry that doesn’t subscribe to an ideology is not poetry at all. I would call the kind of poems like this as pure poetry. Here is a great attempt by the poet to share his experience with the reader… in such wonderful images as “the spotted rain drops” and “Like silence taking flight.” It needs great poetic sensibility to present such word pictures.
Hamlin Garland is a wonderful short story writer too.
