When she is dragged along

the rough gravel and dirt village road

tying her legs to a rope without concern

What bitch can offer her teats

to the pitiful pups following their mother ?

 

They were by her side till yesterday

vying with one another

and rolling playfully one over the other

Teasing and tasting the motherly love

Blissfully sucking her teats at will, and

snuggling between her legs.

 

Poor pups! When the dark wintry night

frightens them tomorrow with a spell of snow

how could they chase away their worst fears

and find some cosy roof to coolly sleep under ?

 

In the endless catechetical enquiry

Of life after death, no answer is firm or final.

But yet, in walking so along,

maybe, the grief drives…  to soothe itself. 

 

But then, for their mother

the clear-eyed helpless whelps

that know not how to shed a tear…

why they follow…?

అలా ఈడ్చుకుపోతున్నప్పుడు
కాలికో తాడు కట్టి, అభావంగా
ఆ మట్టిరోడ్డు, కంకర రాళ్లమీద
వెనుకపడుతున్న ఆ పిల్లల ఆకలి చూపుల
దాహాన్ని తీర్చడానికి, ఏ స్తన్యం సిద్దపడుతుంది.

నిన్నటి దాకా మరి ఆ తల్లి పక్కనేకదా,

ఆ తల్లి కాళ్లమధ్యనే కదా అవి

విసిగించి, విసిగించి, మాతృత్వపు ప్రేమపైబడి,

వెచ్చని, రొమ్ముల మధ్యనే కదా, అవి,

అరమోడ్పు కన్నులతో, పాలు కుడిచి,..

 

మంచుకురుస్తూ చీకటి వణికే వేళ

రేపటి శీతాకాలపు కాళరాత్రి

ఎన్నెన్ని భయాలమూటలను, పారద్రోలి

ఇక ఎలా ప్రశాంతంగా నిద్రిస్తాయో మరి.

దేహాంత నిర్జీవత్వాల ప్రశ్నల పరంపరల్లో
దేని సమాధానాలు, దానివే
అయినా సరే, వెంట నడవడంలో,
ఉపశమించే వేదన అలా అనుసరిస్తుందేమో.

నీరు కార్చడం తెలియని
స్వచ్ఛమైన కళ్లుకల ఆ కుక్కపిల్లలు
మరి, అలా ఆ తల్లి కోసం… ?
