The letter you posted six months back

was delivered to me yesterday.

Never mind the delay.

Compared to the prisoner of Independence struggle 

Who did not reach home as yet

though freed some thirty-nine years ago,

it has reached far sooner.

Enough if you own

a voice to applaud

and the courage to denounce.

Than the bright electric light

that works under controls,

even a faint moonlight that liberally

casts on our face is much better.

Kondepudi Nirmala

(There was once a service by Department of Posts  called Quick Mail Service (QMS) inaugurated on 15th April 1975,  to deliver letters speedily and on priority basis,  charging some nominal fee above the ordinary service.  I think it is rechristened as Speed Post later.

In the present poem Nirmala criticises subtly that we have achieved political independence but not the independence of the mind and expression. We are still slaves to somebody’s ideas. We have to have our own voice  and the courage and will to say what we dislike.  That kind of Independence has not been delivered  so far … is the essence of the poem.  But can we say ‘Yes’ even today, after passage of 65 years?  A definite NO. For we have a great disposition to be ruled and governed by others, than discipline and conduct ourselves.)

Kondepudi Nirmala

Kondepudi Nirmala stands in the forefront of Modern Telugu Poets, and particularly as one of the strong voices of Feminism. Her experience as a journalist with Andhra Jyothi and as Announcer in All India Radio has refined her linguistic and presentation skills and they reached zenith in her poetry.

She has 5 Poetry collections and 1 short story collection to her credit so far. No wonder she received some of the most prestigious awards in Telugu Literature like Tapi Dharma Rao Memorial Award, Free verse Front Award, Devulapalli Krishna Sastry Award  among others.

కొండేపూడి నిర్మల

ఆధునిక తెలుగు కవిత్వంలో కొండేపూడి నిర్మలగారిది ఒక బలమైన గొంతు. ఆంధ్రజ్యోతిలో విలేఖరిగా, ఆకాశవాణిలో వ్యాఖ్యాతగా పదునెక్కిన ఆమె వచనం, కవిత్వంలో ఇంకా పదునెక్కింది. స్త్రీవాదకవయిత్రుల్లో మొదటివరసలో ఎన్నదగ్గవారిలో ఒకరిగా నిలబెట్టింది. సందిగ్ధ సంధ్య, నడిచేగాయాలు, బాధాశప్తనది, మల్టినేషనల్  ముద్దు, నివురు మొదలైన కవితా సంకలనాలేగాక, శతృస్పర్శ అనే కథల సంపుటిగూడా వెలువరించారు.  ఆమె ప్రతిష్ఠాత్మకమైన తాపీ ధర్మారావు స్మారక బహుమతి, ఫ్రీవర్స్ ఫ్రంట్ అవార్డు, దేవులపల్లి కృష్ణశాస్త్రి అవార్డు, మొదలైన ఎన్నో పురస్కారాలు అందుకున్నారు.
