Yet it has incinerated thousands of lives.

Tradition is not darkness

Yet, it has thrown into immeasurable precipices

.

Tradition is not a despot

Yet, it has reduced history to armchair fiction

.

Tradition is not a prison…

Yet, it has confined expanses of unsullied waters

into the weir of threaded ewer

.

And the exhausted palanquin-bearers of tradition

who confuse their deep sighs for cooing, are inured

to donning their conscience, and doffing their clothes .

Kondepudi Nirmala

1988

Kondepudi Nirmala stands in the forefront of Modern Telugu Poets, and particularly as one of the strong voices of Feminism. Her experience as a journalist with Andhra Jyothi and as Announcer in All India Radio has refined her linguistic and presentation skills and they reached zenith in her poetry. She has 5 Poetry collections and 1 short story collection to her credit so far. No wonder she received some of the most prestigious awards in Telugu Literature like Tapi Dharma Rao Memorial Award, Free verse Front Award, Devulapalli Krishna Sastry Award  among others.

In this poem Nirmala subtly delineates what is Tradition by censuring the corruptions to which it was put to over time. Women who suffered in the name of tradition over years is the unmentioned subject of this poem.

ఈ సంప్రదాయం మాకొద్దు.

సంప్రదాయం పిడుగు కాదు
అయినా వేలవేల ప్రాణుల్ని కాల్చేసింది
 
సంప్రదాయం చీకటి కాదు
అయినా అనేకమైళ్ళలోతు అగాధాల్లోకి కూల్చేసింది
 
సంప్రదాయం నియంత కాదు
అయినా చరిత్రమొత్తాన్ని కుర్చీల కథలుగా మార్చేసింది

సంప్రదాయం జైలు కాదు
అయినా నిర్మల జలసంపదల్ని మరచెంబులో బంధించింది.

మోసీ మోసీ మూలిగే కలనాదమనుకునే సంప్రదాయ బోయీలకు
మనసు కప్పుకుని బట్టలిప్పుకోవడం అలవాటయింది.

కొండేపూడి నిర్మల

ఆధునిక తెలుగు కవిత్వంలో కొండేపూడి నిర్మలగారిది ఒక బలమైన గొంతు. ఆంధ్రజ్యోతిలో విలేఖరిగా, ఆకాశవాణిలో వ్యాఖ్యాతగా పదునెక్కిన ఆమె వచనం, కవిత్వంలో ఇంకా పదునెక్కింది. స్త్రీవాదకవయిత్రుల్లో మొదటివరసలో ఎన్నదగ్గవారిలో ఒకరిగా నిలబెట్టింది. సందిగ్ధ సంధ్య, నడిచేగాయాలు, బాధాశప్తనది, మల్టినేషనల్  ముద్దు, నివురు మొదలైన కవితా సంకలనాలేగాక, శతృస్పర్శ అనే కథల సంపుటిగూడా వెలువరించారు.  ఆమె ప్రతిష్ఠాత్మకమైన తాపీ ధర్మారావు స్మారక బహుమతి, ఫ్రీవర్స్ ఫ్రంట్ అవార్డు, దేవులపల్లి కృష్ణశాస్త్రి అవార్డు, మొదలైన ఎన్నో పురస్కారాలు అందుకున్నారు. 

సంప్రదాయాన్ని నిరసిస్తున్నట్టు కనిపిస్తున్న ఈ కవితలో, సంప్రదాయం కాలక్రమంలో ఎటువంటి అపభ్రంశాలకు గురయిందో తెగనాడుతూ, దేన్ని సంప్రదాయంగా పరిగణించాలో పరోక్షంగా సూచిస్తున్నారామె. సంప్రదాయం పేరుతో బలయిపోయిన స్త్రీ ఈ కవితలో అంతర్లీనంగా చెబుతున్న విషయం.
