“వాళ్ళు ముందు కమ్యూనిస్టులకోసం వచ్చేరు” అన్నవి చరిత్రలో చిరస్థాయిగా నిలిచిపోయిన మాటలు. ఇది నాజీలు చేసిన ఘాతుకాలకు మనసు కరిగి, జర్మను మేధావులు ఏమీ పట్టకుండా ఉండడం వల్ల జరిగిన మానవమారణహోమానికి బాధతో మార్టిన్ నీమలర్ పలికిన పలుకులు. ఇవి కేవలం ఆ కాలానికే వర్తిస్తాయనుకోవడం పొరపాటు. చరిత్ర ఇప్పటికి ఎన్నోనిదర్శనాలు  ఇచ్చింది: ఒకసారి పదవిలోకి వచ్చిన తర్వాత పాలకులు తమపదవిని నిలబెట్టుకుందికి ఎన్ని ఘాతుకాలు చెయ్యడానికైనా వెనుదియ్యరని. అది ప్రజాస్వామ్యమైనా, రాచరికమైనా, నియంతృత్వమైనా లేక ఇంకేరకమైన రాజ్యపాలన వ్యవస్థ అయినా. కనుక ప్రజలు వాళ్ళ శ్రేయస్సు కోసం వాళ్ళే అప్రమత్తులుగా ఉండాలి. ఈ కవితలో చెప్పినట్లు  అధికారులు చేసే అకృత్యాలు మనకు సంబంధం లేదని ప్రతిఘటించకుండా ఊరుకుంటే, మనకి సంబంధించిన అన్యాయం జరిగినపుడు, మనకి తోడు ఎవ్వరూ మిగలరు… అవి వాళ్ళకు సంబంధించినది కాదుగా మరి!

These are the most remarkable and controversial lines uttered by the Protestant German Pastor (and social activist) about the passiveness or pathy of the German intellectuals when the Nazi regime chose to decimate all opposition groups one after another. It is pertinent to all times and all places since people in power always try to perpetuate their reign, no matter what kind of polity it is, at the expense of people and their liberty.
