నేనంటే అంత ఇష్టపడుతున్నది నువ్వేనా?

అయితే ముందుగా నా హెచ్చరిక:

నేను నువ్వూహిస్తున్నదాని కంటే భిన్నంగా ఉంటాను. ఏమాత్రం సందేహం లేదు.

నాలో నువ్వు ఆశించిన వ్యక్తి లభిస్తాడనుకుంటున్నావా?

నువ్వు నన్ను ప్రేమించినంత మాత్రాన్న,

నేను నీ ప్రేమికుడిగా మారడం అంత సులభమనుకుంటున్నావా?

నా స్నేహం నిష్కల్మషమైనదనీ,  సంతృప్తినిస్తుందనీ అనుకుంటున్నావా?

నేను నమ్మదగినవ్యక్తిగా, విశ్వాసపాత్రుడిగా అగుపిస్తున్నానా?

నా ఈ మృదు స్వభావమూ ఒర్పూ వంటి ప్రచ్ఛన్న వేషాలు దాటి

నా నిజస్వభావాన్ని ఊహించలేకపోతున్నావా?

నువ్వు ఆవేశంతోగాక, బలమైన కారణాలతోనే

నీ అభిమాన హీరోని చేరుకుంటున్నాననుకుంటున్నావా?

ఓసి పిచ్చిపిల్లా! నీకు ఇదంతా శుధ్ధ అబధ్ధమనీ,

కేవలం భ్రాంతి అయి ఉండవచ్చనీ అనిపించటం లేదూ?

వాల్ట్ విట్మన్

విట్మన్ ఈ కవిత ద్వారా యౌవన ప్రాంగణం లోకి అడుగుపెడుతున్న యువతీ యువకులకి ఒక మంచి హెచ్చరిక చేస్తున్నాడు. వాళ్ళకి  ఆ వయసులో కలిగే ప్రకృతిసిధ్ధమైన మోహానికీ, ప్రేమకీ మధ్య తేడా తెలియదు. తెలుసుకోలేరు కూడా.  ఆ మోహం అలాంటిది. అది హేతువుకి లొంగదు కనుకే మోహం అయింది.  కాని, తర్వాతకూడ, మోహానికీ ప్రేమకీ ఉన్న వ్యత్యాసాన్ని గుర్తించడంలో ఈ కవితలో చెప్పిన తర్కం చక్కగా ఉపకరిస్తుంది.

Are you the new person drawn toward me?
To begin with, take warning–I am surely far different from what you
suppose;
Do you suppose you will find in me your ideal?
Do you think it so easy to have me become your lover?
Do you think the friendship of me would be unalloy’d satisfaction?
Do you think I am trusty and faithful?
Do you see no further than this façade–this smooth and tolerant
manner of me?
Do you suppose yourself advancing on real ground toward a real heroic
man?
Have you no thought, O dreamer, that it may be all maya, illusion?

Whitman through this poem attempts to forewarn youth, who always confuse their infatuation for the opposite sex with love. That is the power of infatuation. It’s never amenable to any kind of reasoning.
