నిశ్చలాంబువులలో సప్త తారకలు
నిర్మలాకాశంలో సప్త ఋషులు
రాకుమారికి సప్తవ్యసనాఘాతాలు
గుండెలోతులలో గుర్తుగా మిగులు

ఆమె పాదాల చెంత ఎర్రగులాబులు
(ఆమె ప్రాభాతవర్ణపు కురులలోనూ ఎర్రగులాబులే)
అరే, ఆమె హృదయమూ, లేనడుముల సంగమంలోనూ
ఎర్రగులాబులు దాగున్నాయి!.

ఆ రెల్లు పొదల్లో, పరివేల్లములపై
చచ్చిపరున్న యోధుడు అందంగా ఉన్నాడు.
మృష్టాన్నం దొరికిన ఆనందంలో
చిరుచేపలు తెగ సంబరపడుతున్నాయి

ఆ కుర్రాడు దీర్ఘనిద్రలోనూ ముచ్చటగా ఉన్నాడు
(స్వర్ణాంబరాలెప్పుడూ మృత్యువుకి ఎరలేగదా!)
అదిగో ఆకసంలోకి  చూడు, కాకోలాలు
నల్లగా, చీకటంత నల్లగా ఎగురుతున్నై.

అక్కడ ఊరకే చచ్చిపడున్న చేతులేం చేస్తాయి?
(ఆమె చేతులపై రక్తపు మరకలున్నాయి)
ఆ లిల్లీలపై ఎందుకుచెప్మా ఎర్రమచ్చలున్నై?
(నదీసైకతాలపై రక్తపు జాడలున్నై.)

దక్షిణం నుండి  తూర్పుకి రెండూ
ఉత్తరం నుండి పడమటికి రెండూ ఎగురుతునై
బొంతకాకులకి అది పసందైన విందు
రాకుమారికి నిర్భరమైన కనువిందు

ఆమెని నిజంగా ప్రేమించినవాడొకడున్నాడు
(అయ్యో, గడ్డకట్టిన నెత్తురింకా ఎర్రగానే ఉంది)
తనగొయ్యి తానే తవ్వుకున్నాడు, కర్రి “యూ” చెట్టుక్రింద
(ఒక గొయ్యి నలుగురికి సరిపడేంత)

స్థాణువైపోయిన ఆకాసంలో చంద్రుడులేడు
బిక్కచచ్చిన నీటిలోనూ లేడు
ఆమె చేసిన పాపాలు ఏడు
అతను చేసిన పాపం మాత్రం… ఒక్కడు!

ఆస్కార్ వైల్డ్

(అక్టోబరు 16, 1854 – నవంబరు 30, 1900)

ఐరిష్ కవీ, నాటకకర్తా, నవలాకారుడూ

(బహుశా, షేక్స్పియరు తర్వాత,   రసస్ఫోరకములైన అతని సూక్తులకి (మన వేమనలా) అంత విస్తృతంగా  ఉటంకించబడే రచయిత ఒక్క ఆస్కార్ వైల్డుమాత్రమే అని నా అభిప్రాయం.  మంచి సాహిత్య సంస్పర్శ ఉన్న కుటుంబంలో పుట్టి (అతని తల్లి కవయిత్రి ఐరిష్ జాతీయ వాది. అతనికి చిన్నతనం లోనే ప్రాచీనకవుల గీతాలు చదివి వినిపించి సాహిత్యానికి కావలసిన ఆవేశాన్నీ, పదసంపదనీ అందించింది)చిన్నతనంలోనే అతను చూపించిన ఆశావహమైన భవిష్యత్తుని కొంతవరకు అందుకోగలిగేడు. అతని నవల The Picture of Dorian Gray, అతని నాటకం, The Importance of Being Earnest అతనికి ఎనలేని కీర్తిని తెచ్చిపెట్టాయి.  జీవిత చరమాంకంలో తన అభిప్రాయాన్ని మార్చుకుని తన నవలలో దాన్ని స్ఫురింపజేసినా,  జీవితం అసంపూర్ణమనీ, కళని జీవితం అనుకరించాలనే Aestheticism అనే సిధ్దాంతాన్నినమ్మి దాన్ని వ్యాప్తిచేసిన వాళ్లలో ముఖ్యుడు.

ఈ కవితలో పైన చెప్పిన Aestheticism  కి అంగాలైన ప్రతీకలూ, సంకేతాలూ వాడుతూ, ఎక్కడా వాచ్యం చెయ్యకుండా, రాజకుమారి చేసిన ఘాతుకాన్ని ఎలా చెప్పాడో పరిశీలించండి.

The Dole of King’s Daughter

Seven stars in the still water,

And seven in the sky;

Seven sins on the King’s daughter,

Deep in her soul to lie.

Red roses at her feet,

(Roses are red in her red-gold hair)

And O where her bosom and girdle meet

Red roses are hidden there.

Fair is the knight who lieth slain

Amid the rush and reed,

See the lean fishes that are fain

Upon dead men to feed.

Sweet is the page that lieth there,

(Cloth of gold is goodly prey,)

See the black ravens in the air,

Black, O black as the night are they.

What do they there so stark and dead?

(There is blood upon her hand)

Why are the lilies flecked with red?

(There is blood on the river sand.)

There are two that ride from the south to the east,

And two from the north and west,

For the black raven a goodly feast,

For the King’s daughter to rest.

Oscar Wilde

(16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900)

Irish Poet, Dramatist and Writer

Perhaps  next to Shakespeare, only Oscar Wilde is very famous and extensively quoted for his pithy statements. A precocious child of great promise, he lived up to it in a way through two great works…  The Picture of Dorian Gray, a novel and The Importance of Being Earnest… a drama. He was an advocate of Aestheticism in art, a philosophy which professes that the purpose of art is to provide refined sensual pleasure rather than convey any moral instruction. For its adherents, Nature is crude and it should follow art than the other way; and, they used suggestions and symbols, in place of statements, to great effect.  However, at the fag-end of his life he had a change of mind about the supremacy of art over Nature.

You may please note how beautifully he depicted the gory crime of the King’s Daughter without making any specific statement… in the tradition of Aestheticism mentioned above.  The still waters, the still heavens of the last stanza are the parting punch to the poem. Enjoy!
