When you were here at my place,

I was there at your place;

When you were alighting at Madras

I was boarding a Calcutta-bound train;

You are the blooming aurora borealis of northern hemisphere

I am a Pelican standing on the shores of southern hemisphere;

There is no love lost between us two,

It is capable of severing us further apart.

Your intentions and ideals are as delicate and beautiful as you are.

You walked down gracefully over the cream of milk,

In the footsteps of the moon and over the lips of flowers;

I have no ideals; I have no faith in mere intentions

I am coarse and always look sullen;

I will be searching for truth over the barbs of life

and amidst puddles of slime.

Loving leisurely, and heaving heavy sighs,

You saunter with your playmates on the terrace;

I will be losing my hair unable to put up with

primitive hunger and barbarous intercourse.

For you truth is real, meaningful and brilliant;

For me truth is frightening, meaningless and incomplete.

At what focus can we meet?

Or, on what latitude can we embrace?

In a whiff of breeze at day break!

I am an owl sitting on the crowning branch

Of a Beech at dusk.

You walk towards the heavenly court

Raking star-dust in your wakes

Devarakonda Balagangadhara Tilak

(21 August 1921 – 1966)

( Tilak for short, was as much at ease in free verse as in metrical poetry. Many of his poems were published in Bharati, the then bench-mark literary journal of repute. While some of his poems show the subjectivity associated with romanticism, his views are more humanistic and in tune with the aspirations of youth for creating a just social order without discrimination of any kind.  That way he was a modernist among Classicists and a Classicist among moderns. His untimely death at the height of poetic effusion has left a great void not filled since).

నువ్వు మావూరొచ్చినపుడు

నేను మీ వూళ్ళో వున్నాను

నువ్వు మద్రాసులో దిగేవేళకి

నేను కలకత్తా రైలెక్కుతున్నాను

నువ్వు ఉత్తరధృవంలో విరిసిన అరోరా బొరియాలిస్ వి

నేను దక్షిణ ధృవతీరాన నిలిచిన పెలికన్ పక్షిని.

నీకూ నాకూ మధ్య ప్రేమ బద్ధవైరం లాంటిది.

అదిపరస్పర దూరీకృత సమర్ధమైనది.

నీ ఆదర్శాలూ ఆశయాలూ

నీలాగ్గా నాజూగ్గా అందంగా వుంటాయి

నువ్వు పాలమీగడల్లోంచి జాబిల్లి అడుగుమీదనుంచి

పువ్వులపెదాలమీంచి నడిచివచ్చావు.

నాకు ఆదర్శాలు లేవు. ఆశయాల్ని నమ్మను.

నేను మోటుగా దిగులుగా వుంటాను.

నేను జీవితం ముళ్ళకంచెలమధ్య, బురదగుంటల మధ్య

నిజంకోసం పరిశోధిస్తూ వుంటాను.

నువ్వు తీరిగ్గా ప్రేమించి మేడమీద చెలికత్తెల మధ్య

విహరిస్తావు నిట్టూర్పులతో

నేను ప్రాకృతమైన ఆకలినీ, పాశవికమైన కామాన్నీ

భరించలేక జుట్టుపీక్కుంటాను

నీకు సత్యం సత్పదార్థం, అర్థవంతం సంతతప్రకాశం

నాకు నిజం భయంకరం, అర్థవిహీనం, అసంపూర్ణం

ఏ అక్షాంశరేఖమీద నిలిచి కౌగలించుకోవడం?

(తిలక్ గతశతాబ్దపు అత్యుత్తమ తెలుగు యువకవుల్లో ఒకరేగాక, అటు సంప్రదాయ రచనలోనూ, ఇటు వచన రచనలోనూ అసమానమైన ప్రతిభకల కవి. ఒక రకంగా చెప్పాలంటే ఇతను ఆత్మాశ్రయ  భావకవిత్వానికీ,  మానవతావాదాశ్రయ అభ్యుదయకవిత్వానికీ సంధిలో ఉంటాడు. ఇతను పిన్న వయసులోనే అకాలమరణానికి గురికాకుండా ఉంటే, తెలుగుకవిత్వానికి ఇంకెన్ని మెరుగులుదిద్దేవాడో అనేది శేష ప్రశ్న.  )
