Whenever I travelled by train

I found him getting into it at some station

His daughter walking him, and following

.

He always rendered one poem or the other, taking

Only from  the Dasarathi Satakam

.

And his voice remained the same—

Like one drowning in a well, in his former life,

Calling out for help and nobody within reach to listen.

.

That call echoed, ringing thin and died down

struggling to stay alive in the gullet,

And at last, reached out to him in this life.

.

His eyes  were  those two sockets,

Which had yearningly looked around, then,

For help in hope, and stalled…

Life lay suspended in those eye slots

Till they found him, once more, in this life.

.

All through his singing; and

Whenever I looked at his eyes,

A feeling charged up in my heart

To rescue that drowning man from the well.

.

Meanwhile, stopping his song,

Begging for a coin here and a copper there, he would get down

After his daughter…  and I was left there behind.

Note:

Dasarathi Satakam is a work in the genre “Satakams” in Telugu Literature consisting of 100 quatrains (Usually 108) of any one form (or more) of poetry with a refrain in the end… stretching either for the entire length of fourth line  or part thereof.  In case of ‘Seesam’ , another form of poetry of 12 lines, it may extend to last two lines.

అంధ భిక్షువు

.

అతడు, రైలులో నే బోయినప్పుడెల్ల
నెక్కడో ఒక్కచోట దా నెక్కు – వాని
నతని కూతురు నడిపించు చనుసరించు.

అతడు దాశరథీశతకాంతరస్థ
మైన పద్యమె పఠించు ననవరతము.

అతని యాగొంతు కట్లనే – అతడు పూర్వ
జన్మమందున నే నూతిలోననో చచ్చిపోవు
చెంతపిలిచిన వినువారలేని లేక,

ఆ పిలుపు ప్రాణకంఠమధ్యములయందు
సన్నవడి సన్నవడి నేటిజన్మ నతని
కనుచు వెదకుచు వచ్చి చేరినది కాక-

అతని కన్నులాబొత్తలే – ఆ సమయము
నందు తన్ను రక్షింప నేరైన వత్తు
రేమొయని చూచి చూచి యట్లే నిలబడి-
అతని ప్రాణాలు కనుగూళ్ళయందు నిలిచి
మరల గనె గాక నేటిజన్మమున నతని.

అతనుపాడినయంతసే పల్ల – నట్టి
యతనికన్నులు చూచినయప్పుడెల్ల,
నూతిలో మున్గునాతని తీతునంచు
వేగిరముపుట్టు నాదు హృద్వీథియందు;

అంతలో పాటనాపి, తా నచట నచట
కానులడిగి, కూతురు ముందుగా, వినిర్గ
మించు నాతడు- నే నందు మిగిలిపోదు!
