ఓ మారుతమా, యుక్రెయిన్ దిశకు వీచు!
ఎందుకంటే, అక్కడ నా ప్రియురాలుని విడిచి వచ్చేను.
అవును, రెండు ముదురుగోధుమరంగు కళ్ళని వదిలి వచ్చేను—
కనుక, ఓ పవనమా, నిశిరాత్రి నుండీ  వీచు.

అక్కడ యుక్రెయిన్ లో ఒక కనుమ ఉంది,
కనుమలో ఒక పల్లె ఉంది,
ఆ పల్లెలో ఒక గుడిశలో ఓ పడుచు ఉంది,
ఒక చిన్న కన్నియ, లోకం తెలియని గువ్వ.

అక్కడ ఓ మారుతమా, సడిచేయకు, నెమ్మది!
ఆమె ముఖం మీద నిశ్చలంగా సేదదీరు;
నువ్వు ఆమె గులాబిరంగు  ముఖం మీదకు వంగి
పరికించు. నా మనోహారిణి నిద్రిస్తోందా?

లేక నా గువ్వ మేలుకుని ఉందా?
ఆమె నిద్రించకపోతే, ఆమె కలగనేలా చెయ్యి
ఆమె ఎన్నటికీ మరిచిపోనని మాటిచ్చిన
ఆమె మనసైనవాడు, కలలో కనిపించేలా.

కానీ ఓ పవనమా! ఆమె నను మరిచినట్టయితే,
మరొకరు ఆమె ప్రేమ చూరగొన్నట్టయితే…
అక్కడే ఉండిపో….
తిరిగి ప్రవాసంలో ఉన్న నాదగ్గరకు రాకు!

యుక్రెయిన్ మీద గాలి వీచుతూనే ఉంది…
నా మనసు పరితపిస్తూనే ఉంది: బాధతో నిండి …
మారుతము  యూక్రెయిన్ దిశగా సాగిపోయింది,
కాని అది వెనకకి మరలి రాలేదు.

Song from Exile

.

Blow, O Wind, unto my Ukraine!

For I left there a sweet maiden.

Yea, two dark-brown eyes I left there–

Blow, thou wind, from midnight onward.

 

There in Ukraine lies a valley,

In the valley there’s a Khuta;

In the hut there dwells a maiden–

Little maiden, wild she-pigeon.

 

There, O Wind, Hush and be silent!

Rest above her face in quiet;

Bow above her rosy face, thou;

Look: is she, my sweetheart, sleeping?

 

Or is she awake, my pigeon?

If she sleeps not, set her dreaming

Of the one she loved, her dearest,

Whom she swore she would forget not.

 

But, O Wind, if she forget me,

If she have another wooer. . . .

Die away in Ukraina–

Come not back to me in exile!

 

. . . . . .

 

And the wind blows on through Ukraine . . .

My heart weeps: ’tis full of sorrows . . .

And the wind fled into Ukraine,

And it never turned backward.
