He searched for traces of originality in people…

In the way they speak, they do, they walk

Or the way they respond with compassion to a beggar

Encountered suddenly on their way;

 

In their love, anger, passion or hatred,

Or the way they converse with a former valentine

Met at the old bus stand after a very long time.

 

“Huh! No use… aping has pervaded the cosmos

Between earth and heaven like ether…”   he murmured.

 

How pleasant, once, he felt the footsteps of people approaching,

Like the bell of a sugar-candy-trolley to the ears as a child; and

How he had watched them keenly, followed them

Sometimes catching them unawares and finally rued it was all in vain.

 

“Strangely, it is the veils that unveil the deficiencies

And the make-up that betrays the ugliness…

The more you pretend to show you have what you have not,

The more palpable will be the have not that you have not …”

he rather uttered the aside aloud.

 

He found nobody around, but he was sure he heard

Someone strongly censuring: “Shut up! You silly fellow!”

 జీరో డిగ్రీ!

 

అతను పెద్దగా ఆశలు పెట్టుకోలేదు కానీ మనుషుల్లో

కొద్దిగా ఒరిజినాలిటీ కోసం వెతికాడు-

 

మాటల్లోనూ, చేతల్లోనూ, అడుగుల్లోనూ,

అనుకోకుండా ఎదురయ్యే ఒక బిచ్చగాడికి

ఔదార్యంతో స్పందించే తీరులోనూ.

 

ప్రేమలోనూ, కోపంలోనూ, రాగంలోనూ, ద్వేషంలోనూ,

పాత బస్ స్టాండ్ లో అనేకానేక సంవత్సరాల తర్వాత

తారసపడ్డ ప్రియురాల్తో జరిపిన సంభాషణలోనూ.

“ఉహూ… లాభం లేదు. అనుకరణ

ఆకాశం నుండి అవని దాకా కమ్మేసింది” అంటూ గొణుక్కున్నాడు.

పిల్లాడికి పీచుమిఠాయి బండి గంట వినిపించినంత ప్రియంగా

తోచేది, ఒకప్పుడు మనుషులు వస్తున్న అలికిడి. తేరిపార చూడ్డం,

కొంత వాళ్ళకు తెలిసీ, మరికొంత వాళ్ళకు తెలీకుండా ఫాలో అవడం,

ఫాయిదా లేదని తెల్సుకుని మనాదించడం…

“ముసుగులే ఎక్కువ లొసుగుల్ని చూపిస్తాయి

మేకప్పే మేని వికృత స్వరూపాన్ని పట్టిస్తుంది

లేనివి ఉన్నవిగా చూపెట్టే కొద్దీ ఉన్నాయని అనుకుంటున్నవి లేనివిగా తెల్సిపోతుంది”

బయటకే అన్నాడు.

చుట్టూ ఎవరూ కనిపించలేదు కానీ, అతనికి

“చుప్ బే సాలే” అని ఎవరో గట్టిగా కసిరినట్టు వినిపించింది!
