ఎప్పుడూ అలంకరించుకుని ఎప్పుడూ నీటుగా తయారై,

పౌడరు రాసుకుని, సెంటు పూసుకుని, కళగా

ఏదో విందుభోజనానికి వెళుతున్నట్టుంటావు.

కళల అంతరార్థం గ్రహించశక్యంకాదనుకో!

కానీ, సుందరీ! అంతా బాగుంటుందనీ,

అంతా మంచేననీ అనుకోనవసరం లేదు.

ఏదీ ఒక సారి ఇటు చూడు, నీ ముఖం చూడనీ

ఆ పొందికలోనే సౌందర్యం ఉంది!

వేలాడుతున్న బట్టలూ, రేగిపోయిన జుత్తూ

వంటి నిర్లక్ష్యం … కళలో చేసే ప్రయోగాలకంటే

ఎక్కువగా నా దృష్టి ఆకర్హిస్తుంది. నిజమే.

అయితే అది నా దృష్టినేగాని, హృదయాన్ని తాకదు.

బెన్ జాన్సన్

బెన్ జాన్సన్, పునరుధ్ధరణ (Renaissance) కాలం నాటి కవీ, నాటక కర్తా, నటుడూను. షేక్స్పియర్ కి సమకాలికుడైన బెన్ జాన్సన్ పేరు చెప్పగానే ముందు గుర్తొచ్చేవి The Alchemist, Bartholomew Fair, Volpone అన్న వ్యంగ్య నాటికలు, Every man in His Humour, Everyman Out of His Humour అన్న హాస్య నాటకాలూ. ఇతను చాలా ఎక్కువ చదువుకున్నాడు. అంతకంటే ఎక్కువగానే వివాదాలలో చిక్కుకున్నాడు కూడ. ఎలిజబెత్ రాణీ 1 తదనంతరం వచ్చిన జేమ్స్ 1 చక్రవర్తి హయాంలో  రాణీ(Queen Anne)  గారి అభిమానానికి పాత్రుడై ఆమెకు ప్రత్యేకంగా కొన్ని Masques (నర్మవేషధారణతో కూడిన రంగస్థల ప్రదర్శనలు)వ్రాసేడు.

ఇది నిన్న ప్రచురించిన రాబర్ట్ హెర్రిక్ కవితకి సమాధానంగా బెన్ జాన్సన్ వ్రాసినది. నిన్న కవితకి దిగువన వ్యాఖ్యలో పొరపాటున రాబర్ట్ బ్రౌనింగ్ అని వ్రాసేను. క్షమించాలి.

Simplex Munditiis ( Simple Elegance)

Still to be neat, still to be dressed,

As you were going to a feast;

Still to be powdered, still (1) perfumed:

Lady, it is to be presumed,

Though art’s hid causes are not found,

All is not sweet, all is not sound..

Give me a look, give me a face,

That makes simplicity a grace;

Robes loosely flowing, hair as free:

Such sweet neglect more taketh me

Than all the adulteries of art;

They strike mine eyes, but not my heart.

Notes:

(1) “Still” here means “always.” Like many simple-looking words, it has changed over time.

You’ll benefit too from any mental images you may have of Elizabethan and Jacobean costume. We’ve all seen enough movies to imagine the elaborate finery and long dresses of ladies around 1600.

Anything you may know about the hygienic habits of bygone centuries might also be relevant! Bathing, for instance, was not widely practiced in any rank of society until the 20th century. So that perfume may well have been needed!

One more bit of background knowledge, although it sounds sensationalist to mention it, is probably relevant too. Venereal disease was widespread in the Elizabethan period (many thought it had been brought back from the New World by the early voyagers).
