కాలు ఆనకుండా పరిగెత్తే
ఈ బరువైన కాలపు పరుగులో
ఎప్పుడూ అదే మూసపోసిన జీవితం
నమ్ముతూనో, అనుమానిస్తూనో
మనల్ని మనం మోసంచేసుకునే పాత అలవాటు.

నిముషంలో గతించే కాలపు పరుగులో
ఎప్పుడూ ఒకటే భ్రమ
శిఖరాగ్రము నుండి మైదానం వైపు
సారించే పోతపోసిన నిర్నిమేషమైన చూపు

అనుభవమూ – ఆశ… పేరు మారుతుంది, అంతే!
మధ్యలో నిరుపయోగంగా ఆత్మ తూగాడుతుంది
భావదారిద్ర్యంతో… తనసంపదని తలుచుకుంటూ
నిన్నా… ఇవాళా… రేపూ.

ఎప్పుడూ, ఒకటే కథ.
నిలకడలేని క్షణం అనంతంగా లయిస్తూంటుంది.  
మళ్ళీ అదే క్షణం పునరావృతమౌతుంది.
నేను సద్వినియోగపరుచుకోకుండా,
నాలో కోరుకున్న మార్పుకి దూరమయిపోతూ

రాత్రయినా, పగలయినా ( దృశ్యం మారినా)
అదే నిరాశాపూరితమైన చూపు
శిధిలమైన ఆలయశిఖరం నుండి

పెర్నాండో పెసో

(జూన్ 13, 1888 – నవంబర్ 30, 1935)

పెర్నాండో పెసో చాలా చిత్రమైన పోర్చుగీసు కవి, రచయిత, అనువాదకుడు, సాహిత్య విమర్శకుడు. కనీసం 81 మారుపేర్లతో,(Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, Álvaro de Campos, Bernardo Soares  అన్నవి చాలా ప్రముఖమైనవి)  రాయడమే కాకుండా, అతని ప్రత్యేకత, ప్రతి మారు పేరుకీ ఒక విలక్షణమైన వ్యక్తిత్వం, కవితా రీతి, సాహిత్య ప్రక్రియ కూడా కలిగి ఉండడం.

Fernando Pessoa

(June 13, 1888 – November 30, 1935)

Fernando Pessoa is regarded as one of the greatest Portuguese poets of 20th century.  After the death of his father in 1893, he moved in 1896 to Durban , the  capital of the then British Colony Natal, along with his mother where his step father was appointed as Portuguese Consul.  A very intelligent child, he received the newly instituted Queen Victoria Memorial Prize for best paper in English in his Matriculation Examination in 1903 from the then University of Good Hope (The University of Cape Town).  He then started writing Short Stories in English under the name David Merrick.   The Natal Mercury in 1904 published his poem under the pseudonym Charles Roberts Anon.  It also published his 4 sonnets in 1905. He caught fancy for pen names and started using scores of names like James Faber, Alexander Search besides the most popular Alberto Caero, Alvaro de Compos, Ricardo Reis etc. There are at least 81 heteronyms used in his literary corpus. The Book of Disquiet, a posthumous publication, and a widely translated one, has been the most notable among his works.

Major English classic poets as Shakespeare, Milton and Spenser and romantics like Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley and Keats and the French symbolists Charles Baudelaire, Maurice Rollinat, Stéphane Mallarmé had great influence on him in his early days. Portuguese poets as Antero de Quental, Gomes Leal, Cesário Verde, António Nobre, Camilo Pessanha or Teixeira de Pascoaes and   modernists as Yeats, Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot, among many other writers also influenced him in later stages.
