గూటిలోంచి జారి పడిపోయిన నిన్నొకసారి చూసేను
గాయపడిన రెక్కతో నీ బెదురుచూపులూ గమనించాను.
నీ గాయాన్ని మాన్పి భయాన్ని నెమ్మదిగా పోగొట్టేను,
అప్పుడు నువ్వు ధైర్యంగా కిచకిచలాడుతూ పాడ బోయేవు.
నిన్ను పెంచుకుందికి నీకో పంజరం కూడా కొన్నాను,
ఈ అడవి నీకు అంత పరిచయం లేదన్న ధీమాతో
కాలక్రమంలో అన్నీ మరిచిపోతావని ఊహించుకుని
నాతోనే నువ్వు ఒంటరిగా ఉండిపోతావని సంతృప్తి పడ్డాను.
కానీ, వేసవి పొడచూపడంతోనే నీలో దూరంగా, ఎక్కడికో
ఎగిరిపోవాలన్న కాంక్ష మోసులువారింది- నీదైన రీతిలో
నాకు చెప్పావుకూడా మౌనంగా నీలాకాశంవంకే చూపులు నిలుపుతూ,
నీ కోరికను గ్రహించి పంజరంలోంచి నిన్ను వదిలేసాను.
ఓ నా చిన్ని విహంగమా! పంజరంలాంటి జీవితం నన్నింకా గట్టిగా పట్టి ఉంది.
కానీ త్వరలోనే, అమృతహస్తమొకటి నాకూ విముక్తి ప్రసాదిస్తుందిలే, తెలుసా!

To A Bird
.
I found you fallen from your nest one day,
With little frightened eyes and wounded wing;
I healed the hurt and coaxed the fear away,
And then you bravely tried to chirp and sing.
I bought a cage to keep you for a pet:
So little of the woodland you had known
I felt assured you would in time forget,
And be content to stay with me alone.
But when the summer came, a longing grew
To fly far, far,- you even told me so
In your mute way, with eyes fixed on the blue.-
I understood the wish, and let you go.
Ah, little Bird, life’s cage still holds me fast,
But a kind hand will free me, too, at last!
