మేము నవ్వుతూ, అబద్ధాలు చెప్పగల ముసుగు వేసుకుంటాం
అది మా బుగ్గలు మరుగుచేసి, కళ్ళకి మెరుపు నిస్తుంది…
అందుకు మనిషి వంచనా శిల్పానికి మేము ఋణపడి ఉన్నాం.
ఒకప్రక్క గుండెలు పగిలి రక్తాలుకారుతున్నా
నవ్వుతూ ఎంతో సునిశితంగా మాటలు అల్లి మాటాడతాం.
మా ప్రతి కన్నీటి బొట్టూ, నిట్టూరుపూ
గణించగల తెలివితేటలు ప్రపంచానికెందుకివ్వాలి?
వీల్లేదు. ప్రపంచాన్ని కేవలం మమ్మల్ని చూడనిస్తాం
కానీ, మేము ముసుగు ధరించే ఉంటాం.
ఓ మహాప్రభూ, క్రీస్తూ! నీ కోసం పిలిచే మా పిలుపులు
చిత్రహింసలు అనుభవిస్తున్న హృదయాలనుండి వెలువడుతున్నవి.
మేము పాడుతూ ఉండొచ్చు, కానీ మా పాదాల క్రింద మట్టి
పరమ నీచమైనది, మా గమ్యం ఇంకా అనంత దూరం;
కానీ ప్రపంచాన్ని మాత్రం వేరేలా తలపోయనీ,
మేము మాత్రం ముసుగు ధరించే ఉంటాం.

We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,

Why should the world be over-wise,

Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We sing, but oh the clay is vile
