దిగంతాలనున్న హరిత మైదానాన్ని దర్శించేను
లోతెరుగని నీడలో పరున్నాను
భూదేవిని అడిగేను, “నన్ను పొదువుకో” అని
రాత్రిని ప్రార్థించేను, “నన్ను ఆవరించ”మని
గాలిమీద చికాకుగా అరిచేను,
“నీకేం తెలీదు ఫో, నీకు ఎదురులేని స్వేచ్ఛ ఉంది,” అని.
చిగురాకులనన్నిటినీ వంగి దగ్గరగా గుమిగూడి
నాకొక తెరగా నిలబడమని బ్రతిమాలుకున్నాను;
తర్వాత చుక్కలతో నా కథ చెప్పుకున్నాను:
“అదిగో ఆ లోయలో, అదే మా ఇంటి దీపం.
నేను తిరిగి వెళ్ళిపోతానని తెలుసు గాని,
ముందు, ఈ కనికరంలేని అడవిలో పడుక్కోనీ” మని
ఒక మంట మరీ దగ్గరగా రగిలింది,
ఒక పేరు మరీ ప్రాణపదమైపోయింది
నాకు భయమేస్తోంది….
నిశ్చలమైన కొండలకీ, చల్లని నేలకీ, దూరాన ఆకసానికీ
గోడువెళ్ళబోసుకున్నాను: ‘నా గుండెలోని మనిషి నాకు స్వంతం కాదు!
“ఓహ్! గాలిలాగా, పక్షిరెక్కలాగా
నాకూ స్వేచ్ఛ ఉంటే ఎంత బాగుండును!
ప్రేమ మహా దారుణమైనది!”

Love Is a Terrible Thing
.
I went out to the farthest meadow,
I lay down in the deepest shadow;
And I said unto the earth, “Hold me,”
And unto the night, “O enfold me,”
And unto the wind petulantly
I cried, “You know not for you are free!”
And I begged the little leaves to lean
Low and together for a safe screen;
Then to the stars I told my tale:
“That is my home-light, there in the vale,
“And O, I know that I shall return,
But let me lie first mid the unfeeling fern.
“For there is a flame that has blown too near,
And there is a name that has grown too dear,
And there is a fear …”
And to the still hills and cool earth and far sky I made moan,
“The heart in my bosom is not my own!
“O would I were free as the wind on wing;
Love is a terrible thing!”
