It is a vast expansive ocean of verdure
How many leaves had been collected to create this!
How many trees had been felled!!
And how many saplings needed to be planted!!!

The waves that crash on its shores
Were but the flotsam of dry leaves
Which had lost their vigor,
And the ocean shall not covet them anymore;
She assigns to the winds the duty
To dribble up the mess every time.

That Ocean
Seems so pacific always to watch
Giving an illusion of cool and green;
But, within would be raging
Infernal Volcanoes
Earthquakes,
Animal and human sacrifices …endlessly.

Then one day,
A half-felled tree
Sprouted a leaflet all of a sudden;
All barren and effete stumped up logs
Started the grapevine in whispers:

For all that, and all that
What is the gender of the seed
That impregnated the tree?
Is it female or male?

Mercy Margaret is a Post Graduate in Commerce and Business Administration and is presently working as Assistant Professor in a College of Management, Hyderabad.  She was  an active youth leader at college.  She is a poetess, Social Activist and a Counselor, running her blog  “manasu palike mouna geetham”.

The recent spate of incidents of atrocities on women, in public and private, letting the culprits go scot-free many times with the connivance of the weak political commitment and ready-to-serve bureaucracy, judiciary and law enforcing agencies, a rational mind cannot sit idle resigning to the fate or grieving for the change of times.  It introspects and raises serious questions that challenge fundamental issues of our faith. The gender imbalance in the society to the disadvantage of the female, poses a very serious threat to its existence on one hand and to the moral fabric on the other. If poetry is a measure of the contemporary society, then, in a very complex world ours, a poem needs to be very complex. The inconsistencies in the wording of this poem are rather apparent and deliberate.

విత్తనం ఆడా ?? మగా? 

అదంతా ఆకుపచ్చ సముద్రం

ఎన్ని చెట్ల ఆకులు తెంచి సముద్రాన్ని

సృష్టించారో?

ఎన్ని మ్రానులు నరికి

ఎన్ని మొక్కలు నాటి నిర్మించారో ??

ఆ సముద్రపు తీరానికి కొట్టుకొచ్చే అలలు

సారంపోయి ప్రాణంలేని ఎండుటాకులు

వాటిని

సముద్రం తనలో ఉంచుకోదు

గాలికి ఎప్పటికప్పుడు పని చెప్పి

శుభ్రం చేయిస్తూ ఉంటుంది  

ఆ సముద్రం

బయటికెప్పుడు ప్రశాంతంగానే కనిపిస్తుంది

పచ్చగానే ఉన్నట్టు భ్రమ కలిగిస్తుంది

లోలోపల అగ్ని పర్వతాలు

భూకంపాలూ

జంతుబలులు నరహత్యలు జరుగుతూనే ఉంటాయి. 

అకస్మాత్తుగా ఒక రోజు

ఆ సముద్రంలో సగం కొట్టేసిన మ్రానొకటి గర్భం

దాల్చింది

గర్భం కోల్పోయి మోడురారిన

ప్రతి మొద్దు గుస గుసలు

మొదలుపెట్టాయి

ఇంతకు

ఆ మ్రానులో పడ్డ విత్తనపు వీర్యం

ఆడదా ??

మగదా ?? అని.
