ఆమని మొలక లాంటి లేతపిల్ల
ఆనందంతో తనకురులు దువ్వుకుంటోంది.
అద్దం “నువ్వు చాలా అందవికారంగా ఉన్నావు,” అంది.
అయితేనేం,
ఆమె పెదవులమీద గువ్వలాంటి రహస్యపు
చిరుదరహాస సౌందర్యం నాట్యం చేస్తోంది…
ఎందుకంటే,
పొద్దున్నే ఆ అంధబాలుడు
“నువ్వు చాలా అందంగా ఉన్నావు” అని అనలేదూ?

ఈ కవితలోని సౌందర్యం:
యవ్వనప్రాదుర్భావంలో అందరికీ తెలియకుండానే ప్రేమభావనలు అంకురిస్తాయి. అవి అందచందాలతో నిమిత్తం లేనివి. నిజానికి అందం చూసేవాళ్ల కళ్ళనుబట్టి ఉంటుందని కదా ఆర్యోక్తి. ఇక్కడ వయసులోకి అడుగుపెడుతున్న ముగ్ధ ఉంది. ఆమెని ఒక యువకుడు, అంధుడైనా సరే, అందంగా ఉన్నావని మెచ్చుకున్నాడు. ఆ తీపి భావన పిల్ల మనసులో మెదలాడుతోంది. అదికూడ తనకొక్కతెకే తప్ప ఎవరికీ తెలియని గువ్వలాటి రహస్యం. ఆ స్థితిలో ప్రపంచం మనగురించి ఏమనుకున్నా లక్ష్యం చెయ్యని ధైర్యం వస్తుంది. ఆటువంటి మనః స్థితిని చాలా చక్కగా ఆవిష్కరించేడు కవి.

Mirror, Mirror
A young spring-tender girl
combed her joyous hair
'You are very ugly' said the mirror.
But,
on her lips hung
a smile of dove-secret loveliness,
for only that morning had not
the blind boy said,
'You are beautiful'?

“Milligan’s touch has a salt-of-the-earth quality to it that makes it immediately credible. He does not disguise the young girl’s objective ugliness in mirror-image, just as he manages to completely convey her new-found beauty from within. And what a master wordsmith he was! I can’t imagine a better way to say so much in a single line than: ‘on her lips hung/ a smile of dove-secret loveliness’….
