ఓ, వనజనుడా! ఆ చెట్టుని విడిచిపెట్టు!
దాని ఏ కొమ్మని కూడా తాకవద్దు!
నా చిన్నతనంలో దాని నీడనే ఆడుకున్నాను,
దాన్నిప్పుడు నేను సంరక్షిస్తాను.
మా గుడిశె ముందు మా తండ్రి స్వయంగా నాటిన చెట్టది.
కనుక ఓ వనవాసీ, దాని ఊసెత్తకు.
నీ గొడ్డలితో దాన్ని బాధించకు.

ఆ చెట్టు అందరికీ చిరపరిచితం
దాని పేరు ప్రఖ్యాతులు దేశాలూ,
మహాసముద్రాలు దాటి వ్యాపించేయి.
అటువంటిదాన్ని ఇప్పుడు నరకబోతావా?
ఓ వనచారీ, ఈ నీ ప్రయత్నం మానుకో!
నేలతో దానికున్న అనుబంధాన్ని తెగగొట్టకు.
ఓయి నాయనా! ఆకాశానికి ఎదిగిన
ఆ దేవదారు వృక్షాన్ని విడిచిపెట్టు.

ఈ చెట్టునీదనే కూర్చునే వాడిని;
వాళ్ళ సంతోషాతిశయపు క్షణాల్లో
నా అప్పచెల్లెళ్ళు ఇక్కడే ఆడుకునే వారు;
మా అమ్మ నన్ను కన్నది ఈ చెట్టు క్రిందే;
మా నాన్న నాకు నడక నేర్పిందీ ఈ ఛాయనే…
నా కన్నీళ్ళు నీకు నవ్వుతెప్పిస్తే, క్షమించు
కానీ, ఈ చెట్టుని మాత్రం విడిచిపెట్టు.

ఓ నా వృక్షమిత్రమా! నీ బెరడులాగే
నా హృదయతంత్రులుకూడ నిన్ను పెనవేసుకున్నాయి!
నీ గుబురుల్లోనే అడవిపిట్టలు పాటలుపాడేది.
ఇప్పటికీ నీ కొమ్మలు ఆదరంగా స్వాగతిస్తుంటాయి.
ఇదిగో, కుఠారధారీ, ఈ చోటు విడిచిపో!
దాన్ని రక్షించడానికి నాకు చేతులున్నంతవరకూ

(October 10, 1802 – July 6, 1864) అమెరికను కవీ, సంపాదకుడూ, గీత రచయిత.
George pope Morris, Nathaniel Parker Willis తో కలిసి సంయుక్తంగా న్యూయార్క్ మిర్రర్ అన్న పత్రిక స్థాపించడమే గాక అది బహుకాలం నడవడానికి తగిన హంగులు సమకూర్చిన వాడు. ప్రఖ్యాత అమెరికను కవి ఎడ్గార్ ఏలన్ పో కవిత “The Raven” తొలి కాపీని 29 జనవరి 1845 సంచికలో అతని పేరుతో ప్రచురించేడు కూడా. ఉత్తరోత్రా అదే సంవత్సరంలో వ్యవస్థాపకులిద్దరూ కలిసి The Prose and Poetry of America అన్న సంకలనం తీసుకువచ్చారు కూడ. 1846 అతను స్థాపించిన The National Press అన్న పత్రిక ఎన్ని పేరులు మారినా (Presently, Town and Country)ఇప్పటికీ నిరాఘాటంగా నడపబడుతోంది.

Touch not a single bough!
In youth it sheltered me,
And I’ll protect it now.
‘Twas my forefather’s hand
That placed it near his cot;
There, woodman, let it stand,
Thy axe shall harm it not!
That old familiar tree,
Whose glory and renown
Are spread o’er land and sea,
