Rilke … K. Godavari Sarma

.

You like questions.

The more,

the more it’s hard

to find answers

to those questions.

And the most like

if there are no answers to them at all!

Like rooms locked up

And languages you can’t make out

they attract you to the extreme.

And you sing in those tongues

incarcerated in those rooms.

Rilke!*

you are an answerless question.

Is it why I like you more?

Dr. K. Godavari Sarma.

(Dr. K. Godavari Sarma was working as English lecturer in Kakinada when a car accident took away his promising career as a bi-lingual Poet. He brought out one poetry anthology “Godavari Galagalalu (1980) in Telugu and another “On the Banks of Nagavali” in English. His doctoral thesis was about Indo-Anglian Poetry. “Antarvaahini” from which the above poem was selected, was a posthumous publication. His wife Mrs. Syamala is presently working as English Lecturer in GMRIT,  Rajam.)

Note:

*Rainer Maria Rilke (4 December 1875 – 29 December 1926) was a Bohemian-Austrian Poet. He was considered to be one of the most notable poets of German. Duino Elegies was his best known work. He also wrote more than 400 poems in French. In an age of disbelief, solitude and profound anxiety, his images focus on the difficulty of camaraderie and communication.

Though the poem looks somewhat personal, we still have our liking for certain things just the same way the poet had for Rilke. They are unknown and inexplicable sometimes. And where known, they will be sticking prejudices.
