పిల్లలకు సంబంధించినంతవరకు

మనం నేర్చుకున్న అతిముఖ్యమైన విషయం ఏమిటంటే

వాళ్ళని TV దరిదాపుల్లోకి ఎన్నడూ, ఎన్నడూ రానియ్యకూడదని…

అంతకంటే మంచిది…

వీలయితే ఇంట్లో ఆ బుధ్ధితక్కువ దాన్ని కొనిపెట్టకపోవడం.

సుమారు ప్రతి ఇంట్లో పిల్లలు నోరువెళ్ళబెట్టుకుని TV చూడ్డం గమనిస్తూనే ఉన్నాం.

వాళ్ళు అక్కడే కదలకుండ కూర్చుని,

అక్కడే తింటూ తాగుతూ ఒంటిమీద ఒంపేసుకుంటూ,

కనుగుడ్లు బయటకి వచ్చేసేదాకా చూసి అక్కడే పడుక్కుంటుంటారు;

(క్రిందటివారం  ఎవరింట్లోనో నేల మీద ఒక డజను కంటిగుడ్లు దొరికాయట)

వాళ్ళు దానికి వశం అయిపోయేదాకా,

అందులో వచ్చే దారుణమైన చెత్తంతా  వాళ్ళ బుర్రలో కెక్కేదాకా

చూస్తూ కూర్చుంటూ, కూర్చుంటూ చూస్తుంటారు.

నిజమే! మీరు చెప్పేది ఒప్పుకుంటా:

అదివాళ్ళని కదలకుండా కూచోబెడుతుంది,

గోడలూ కిటికీలూ ఎక్కరు,

ఒకరినొకరు తన్నుకోడం కొట్టుకోడం చెయ్యరు,

మిమ్మల్ని వంటింట్లో ప్రశాంతంగా వండుకోనిస్తారు,

బట్టలుతుక్కోడం, గిన్నెలుకడుక్కోవడం చెయ్యనిస్తారు వగైరా వగైరా.

కాని,  అది మీ బంగారు కొండలపై చూపించే పరిణామాలపై ఆలోచించడానికి

ఎప్పుడైనా ఒక్క క్షణం ప్రయత్నించేరా?

వాళ్ళ మెదడు మొద్దుబారిపోతుంది,

వాళ్ళ ఊహాశక్తి మందగిస్తుంది,

వాళ్ల మెదళ్ళో చెత్తపోగై సందేహాలతో నింపుతుంది,

వాళ్ళని ఎంత మందమతులుగా, గుడ్డివాళ్లగా మారుస్తుందంటే,

వాళ్ళకి ఊహలలోని అనుభూతులూ, కాల్పనిక లోకాలూ అర్థం కావు.

వాళ్ళ మెదడు మట్టిముద్దలా తయారై,

వాళ్ళ ఆలోచనా శక్తి తుప్పుపట్టి ఎదుగుదల నిలిచిపోయి,

ఇకనుండి వాళ్ళు చూడడమే తప్ప ఆలోచించగల శక్తి కోల్పోతారు

.

“సరే!”, ” సరే!”, అని మీరు అసహనంగా అరవొచ్చు.

“అది తీసెస్తే మా చిన్నారులకి వినోదం కలిగించే దెలా? చెప్ప”మని  నిలదియ్య వచ్చు.

దానికి సమాధానం ఈ భూతాన్ని కనుక్కోక ముందు మీ చిన్నారులు

వాళ్ళని వాళ్ళు సంతృప్తిపరుచుకుందికి ఏం చేసేవారని?

గుర్తులేదా? మరిచిపోయారా? చెప్పనా?

సరే. అయితే నెమ్మదిగానైనా  గట్టిగా చెబుతా వినండి.

వాళ్ళు  చ …దు… వు …కు… నే… వా …ళ్ళు.

వాళ్ళు చదివి చదివి చదివి … మరిన్ని చదవడానికి ప్రయత్నించే వాళ్ళు.

వాళ్ళ దుంపదెగ! ఎంత చదివే వారంటే

వాళ్ళ జీవితంలో సగం చదువుతోనే గడిచిపోయేది!

పిల్లలపుస్తకాల సొరుగులనిండా రకరకాల పుస్తకాలుండేవి.

పిల్లల గదుల్లో పుస్తకాలు విచ్చలవిడిగా పడి ఉండేవి.

పడకగదిలో, పక్క మీద, చదవడానికి పుస్తకాలు ఎదురుచూస్తూండేవి.

ఏలాంటి పుస్తకాలు! చక్కని చిత్ర విచిత్ర కథలు,

ఆది శేషుడూ, కాళీయుడూ, దయ్యాలూ, భూతాలూ,

రాణులూ మహారాణులూ, తిమింగలాలూ,

అపురూప శక్తులకోసం, గుప్తనిధుల కోసం వేటలూ,

సప్తసముద్రాలు దాటడం, దొంగలతో, దోపిడీ దారులతో యుధ్ధాలూ,

లిల్లిపుట్ ప్రపంచాలూ, తుఫానుల్లో నౌకాయానాలూ, ఏనుగులమీద ప్రయాణాలూ,

నరభక్షకులు పొయ్యిచుట్టూ చేరి సలసల మరుగుతున్నది కలపడాలూ,

(ఇంత కమ్మని సుగంధం వస్తోంది. ఎక్కడనుండి చెప్మా? ఓహ్! అది పెనెలోప్!)

పిల్లలైతే బీట్రిక్స్ పోటర్ (Beatrix Potter) కథలు…

దుర్మార్గపు నక్క టాడ్*, పొగరుబోతు ఉడత నట్కిన్*,

అల్లరి పంది పిగ్లింగ్ బ్లాండ్*, ముళ్ళపంది టిగ్గీ వింకిల్* గురించీ,

ఒంటెకు దాని వీపుమీద మూపురం ఎలా వచ్చిందో,

కోతికి దాని పిర్రలు ఎలా అరిగిపోయాయో,

అహంకారి కప్ప గురించీ, పంచతంత్ర కథలూ,

చందమామలూ, బాలమిత్రలూ అబ్బ ఏం పుస్తకాలవి!

నిన్న మొన్నటిదాకా పిల్లలు చదువుతూ ఉండేవాళ్ళు.

కాబట్టి, దయచేసి, మిమ్మల్ని అర్ధిస్తున్నా,  వేడుకుంటున్నా,

వెళ్ళి ఆ TVని పారేయండి. దాని జాగాలో

గోడకి ఒక పుస్తకాల బీరువా ఒకటి తగిలించండి.

దాన్ని పుస్తకాలతో నింపండి.

మీ పిల్లల అలకచూపులూ, అరుపులూ, కేకలూ,

మిమ్మల్ని విసుగుతో కొరకడాలూ, తన్నడాలూ, కొట్టడాలూ పట్టించుకోకుండా.

భయం లేదు. నేను హామీ ఇస్తున్నా.

వారం రెండువారాలు  తిరక్కుండా  చెయ్యడానికి వేరే ఏమీలేక,

వాళ్ళమట్టుకు వాళ్ళకే చదవాలనిపిస్తుంది.

ఒక సారి వాళ్ళు చదవడం ప్రారంభిస్తే,

బాబోయ్, చెప్పడం నా తరం కాదు.  మీరే చూద్దురుగాని.

క్రమంగా వాళ్ళ మనసుల్లో పెరిగే  ఆనందం.

వాళ్ళకే ఆశ్చర్యం వేస్తుంది ఆ కంపుగొట్టు,

అసహ్యకరమైన రోతపుట్టించే టెలివిజన్ తెరమీద ఇన్నాళ్ళూ ఏమిచూసేమా అని.

అంతే కాదు,

మీరు చేసినపనికి, పిల్లలందరూ  మిమ్మల్ని ఇంకా ఎక్కువగా ప్రేమిస్తారు.

The most important thing we’ve learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is never, NEVER, NEVER let
Them near your television set —

The idiotic thing at all.
In almost every house we’ve been,
We’ve watched them gaping at the screen.
They loll and slop and lounge about,
And stare until their eyes pop out.

A dozen eyeballs on the floor.)
They sit and stare and stare and sit
Until they’re hypnotised by it,

With all that shocking ghastly junk.
Oh yes, we know it keeps them still,

They never fight or kick or punch,
They leave you free to cook the lunch
And wash the dishes in the sink —
But did you ever stop to think,
To wonder just exactly what
This does to your beloved tot?
IT ROTS THE SENSE IN THE HEAD!
IT KILLS IMAGINATION DEAD!
IT CLOGS AND CLUTTERS UP THE MIND!
IT MAKES A CHILD SO DULL AND BLIND
HE CAN NO LONGER UNDERSTAND
A FANTASY, A FAIRYLAND!

The nursery shelves held books galore!

More books were waiting to be read!

Of dragons, gypsies, queens, and whales
And treasure isles, and distant shores
Where smugglers rowed with muffled oars,
And pirates wearing purple pants,
And sailing ships and elephants,
And cannibals crouching ’round the pot,
Stirring away at something hot.

With Mr. Tod, the dirty rotter,
And Squirrel Nutkin, Pigling Bland,
And Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and
Just How The Camel Got His Hump,
And How the Monkey Lost His Rump,
And Mr. Toad, and bless my soul,
There’s Mr. Rat and Mr. Mole
Oh, books, what books they used to know,
Those children living long ago!
So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.
Then fill the shelves with lots of books,
Ignoring all the dirty looks,
The screams and yells, the bites and kicks,
And children hitting you with sticks –
Fear not, because we promise you
That, in about a week or two
Of having nothing else to do,
They’ll now begin to feel the need
Of having something to read.
And once they start — oh boy, oh boy!
You watch the slowly growing joy
That fills their hearts. They’ll grow so keen
They’ll wonder what they’d ever seen
In that ridiculous machine,
That nauseating, foul, unclean,
Repulsive television screen!
And later, each and every kid
Will love you more for what you did.
