ప్రాభాతసంధ్య తూరుపు నీలితెరలపై
బంగారు వన్నెలు అద్దుతున్నప్పుడు
నీతో ఒక్క గంట చాలు!
ఇక రోజులో రాబోయే కష్టాలనీ, కన్నీళ్ళనీ
శ్రమనీ, సంక్షోభాల్నీ
బాధలూ, వాటి జ్ఞాపకాలనీ మరిచిపోకుండా
నన్నేదీ కట్టిపడెయ్యలేదు!

నీతో ఒక గంట చాలు!
మండువేసవి మధ్యాహ్న సూర్యుడు
ప్రచండంగా ప్రకాశిస్తున్నప్పుడు
చల్లని చెట్టునీడకంటే, సేదదీర్చే కొండవాలు కంటే
పొలంలో నమ్మకంగా పాటుపడుతున్న రైతుకి
శ్రమకుతగ్గ ప్రతిఫలం ముట్టజెప్పగలిగిన దెవ్వరు?

ఆహ్! నీతో ఒక్క గంట చాలు!
సూర్యుడు అస్తమించిన తర్వాత…
ఆశల్నీ, కోరికల్నీ విసర్జించి
రోజల్లాపడ్డ నిరుపయోగమైన శ్రమనీ,
పెరుగుతున్న అవసరాలనీ, తరుగుతున్న ఫలితాల్నీ,
యజమాని అహంకారాన్నీ, గుర్తించని కష్టాన్నీ
మరిచిపొమ్మని ఇంకెవరు బోధించగలరు?

సర్ వాల్టర్ స్కాట్.

(ఆగష్టు 15, 1771 – సెప్టెంబరు 21, 1832)

స్కాటిష్ కవీ, నవలాకారుడూ, నాటకరచయితా, అన్నిటినీ మించి అపూర్వమైన జానపద సాహిత్యాన్ని శోధించి,సంగ్రహించి, సంకలించి, ప్రచురించిన  సాహిత్యవేత్త.

నిజం చెప్పాలంటే, సాహిత్య చరిత్రని వెలికితియ్యడం, మన మూలాలు అందులో వెతుక్కోగలగడంలో స్కాటిష్ సాహిత్యవేత్తలదగ్గరనుండి మనం నేర్చుకోవలసినది ఎంతైనా ఉంది. నిజానికి మనమందరం ఒకరకంగా “Converts” మే… మతం  మార్చుకోకపోయినా.   మనం నాగరికత, విద్య, సంస్కారం వెతుక్కుంటూ, మన మూలాల్ని చులకన చేసి, అశ్రధ్ధచేసి, మనమనుగడకి శతాబ్దాలబట్టి ఆలంబనగా ఉన్న విలువైన సమాచారాన్ని కోల్పోయాం. జానపద సాహిత్యం ఒక క్రిందిస్థాయి సాహిత్యంగావిలువకట్టి ఉపేక్షించాం. నాగరికులకు ఎందులోనూ తీసిపోరని ఆ సాహిత్యంలోని నిక్షిప్తమైన సౌరభాలను, ఏ రాళ్ళపల్లి అనంతకృష్ణశర్మగారిలాంటివారో, వెలికితీసి (అనువదించి) చెబితేతప్ప తెలుసుకోలేని స్థితికి చాలాకాలం క్రిందటే జారిపోయాం. (ఇందులో నేను నన్నూ, నాతో ఎకాభిప్రాయం కలవాళ్లనే జతచేశాను. మిగతావారు దీనికి మినహాయింపని విజ్ఞులు గుర్తించ ప్రార్థన). అయినా మించిపోయింది లేదు. ఇప్పటికైనా జానపద సాహిత్యం, అందులోని సాహిత్య , సంగీత, వ్యావసాయిక, ఆరోగ్య విషయాల పరిశోధనకై ఏ యూనివర్శిటీనో పూనుకోవచ్చు. నా ఉద్దేశ్యం పాతదానిలో అన్నీ ఉన్నాయని కాదు. గురజాడచెప్పినట్టు కొత్తదానిలోని విశేషాలనీ, సౌలభ్యాన్నీ,  పాతదానిలోని కాలానికి నిలబడ్డ సత్యాలతో అన్వయించి, రెండిటి మేలుకలయికతో ముందుకు సాగాలనే.

పైన పేర్కొన్నట్టు, స్కాట్ కి అతని జానపదసాహిత్యపరిశోధనేగాక, స్కాటిష్ చరిత్రలో అత్యంత సాహసవంతుడైన హీరో “రోబ్రాయ్” జీవితం ఆధారంగా వ్రాసిన నవలా, అలాగే చారిత్రక-కల్పనా నవల “ఐవన్ హో” అతనికి మంచి పేరు తెచ్చాయి.  జానపదసాహిత్య పరిశోధనాపత్రాలలో ఇప్పటికీ అతితరచుగా ప్రస్తావించబడేవి అతను సంకలించిన Ballads “Thomas Rymer” “Lord Randal” and the “Daemon Lover”. సాహిత్య పరిశోధనలో ఒక ప్రత్యేక విభాగంగా కొనసాగుతోంది  Ballads  అన్న విషయం.

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832)... Scottish Poet, Novelist, playwright and editor of Scottish Ballads.

Born on August 15, 1771 as the son of a solicitor Walter Scott and Anne, Scott was, one of the most accomplished and reputed and revered writers of his times. He studied law at Edinburgh University and  even had his earlier apprenticeship under his father, but his interest in Scottish Ballads made him devote much of his time and efforts for tracing, collecting, editing and publishing old Scottish Ballads under Minstrelsy Of The Scottish Border (1802–03) (And among the Ballads,  Thomas Rymer, Lord Randal and the Daemon Lover  are most frequently quoted in the folklore literature, even to this day).

He was indisputably a novelist of the first rank. Three of his novels became very famous among others:  Waverley (1814) (series), with the 1745 rebellion for restoration of a Scottish family to the British throne as its theme; Rob Roy (1817), about one of the greatest heroes of Scotland, and Ivanhoe (1819), a historical fiction. The last one  was  acclaimed by the scholars and commoners alike. John Henry Newman said that through this novel Scott had revived interest in Medievalism.
